Why We Do It

Once upon a time, folks pondered, “if HBCU’s were still relevant”, since PWI’s (Predominantly White Institutions) often encouraged by affirmative action statues, have opened their doors to accepting more students of color, offering more financial aid to attend. Our research has shown that while PWI’s will always offer more money to attract smarter students of color, these efforts are neither comprehensive for all student types, nor do they accommodate average students not playing college sports. Furthermore, we have seen those choosing to attend HBCU’s often have less access to college aid and are predisposed to more college debt, adding to the wealth gap.

No student or parent should have to choose their school by “whoever offers the most money”, but this happens every day. This notion is void of the cultural encouragement often present at HBCU’s, instilling confidence to succeed and does not take in to account the social, mental and environmental factors that can predict success in attending college.
HBCU “Greatness” in our communities, is defined as the quality or state of being important, notable, or distinguished, which we believe is a driver to increase awareness, enrollment, and success in our schools to defeat the wealth gap.
